Otago Community Hospice / Garage Tour weekend

Lorraine and Bob King presented the Otago Community Hospice with a cheque for $412, which is the proceeds from the sales of the DVDs and books from the Garage Tour weekend. Please pass on my thanks to all the club members that bought the DVD and book. The Hospice posted this photo on their Facebook page.

Clyde Run – September 2015.

Another fabulous Southern Mustang Club weekend away. We had 18 cars in total, a great turnout. A big THANK YOU to Mark and Chris for organising such a great weekend. Some of us travelled up on the Friday night and meet up for drinks and a meal at the Dunstan Pub. Saturday morning we got away from Clyde at 10.30am and travelled together, picking up the Cromwell cars along the way.

First stop was the Wanaka Airport, Classic Car Museum, Warbirds & Wheels. Garth Hogan came along and gave us a very informative talk on the history of some of the vehicles. We also have a lovely lunch here at the Retro Diner.

Next stop was a garage tour at Garth & Andrea Hogan’s home. Garth is the son of the “Flathead V8 Guru, Ron Hogan”. Ron designed the aluminium heads for the flathead V8. Later models saw a twin ignition system that had two sparkplugs per cylinder. This produced a lot more horsepower in the old flatties. Garth is still producing these heads and ignition systems today and is exporting them to the States. He built a flathead V8 that produced in excess of 650 horsepower and unofficially did over 200 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The official record was 187mph. Us ladies were also treated to a wine tasting. This was great, we had a few tastings, a few laughs and a few bottles of wine were purchased. What a great hospitable couple. Cruised back to Clyde to the Post Office Café & Bar for a few drinks and evening meal. A nice night was had by all.

Some of us meet up Sunday morning for a coffee at Oliver’s. Was lovely getting to know some of the new members, let’s do it all again soon.

Run to Dunedin 2015

Hi everyone, we’ve had time to reflect on what a fantastic weekend was had by all who went to Dunedin. Bob King did a great job coordinating accommodation, garage raids and other activities for about 20 couples. This was the best turnout of members for a long time. The only thing he got wrong was the weather. Our thanks go to the McDonalds, Mcneills and the Clarks for allowing us to view their beautiful musclecars, about 30 in total leaving most of us very envious. Their garages were something to behold with hardly a spec of dust anywhere. Thanks also for the nibbles, very welcome. We had a fairly good session at Cargills Hotel before being taken to Speights Brewery for a guided tour and then made the best of a short time having a few free ales in their bar. Back at Cargills Hotel we enjoyed an evening meal while in the background Bob had set up a video recording of the days garage tour with appropriate sound. This will be for sale at a later date, good for nostalgia. The evening kicked on a bit later in the units. A leisurely start on Sunday morning took us over the coast road through Brighton and Taieri Mouth to Waihola and on to seaside Kaka Point for a great lunch. Early afternoon saw the Dunedinites and the Southlanders go their own way home, the latter through scenic Catlins. A good time had by all and it would be great to see these numbers attend future events. It was good to see some new members and a few new cars.

Cheers Bruce Jenks
